REMBRANDT'S J'ACCUSE
Brief
'Film to Book: Analyse an Essay-film and use its whole script to design a physical publication.'
This publication is based on Peter Greenaway’s essay-film ‘Rembrandt’s J’Accuse’. The project aims to translate not only the full script but also the layered experience of the movie into an analogue space. It captures the dynamic, true-crime essence of the film, evoking the feel of a dossier compiled by an unknown investigator—possibly the director himself.
‘Rembrandt’s J’Accuse’ explores the painter’s life and dissects his masterpiece, ‘The Nightwatch’. The film dynamically unfolds as an investigation into the artwork, searching for clues to a murder, but ultimately reveals a very different conspiracy. While this publication stands as a work of its own, it also aids in understanding the film’s intricate message.

The Process
To combine my love and background for art with my passion for design, allowed me to take a new approach to my work. To publish a whole script was a daunting task but made me slow down and carefully dissect my process. I started experimenting and let the flow direct me. My tutor also introduced me to 'Duchamp's' work and I elevated my file approach to a book-box format. There were many layers to the film, multiple characters, stories and an overlying narrative. I created a complex but cohesive project that was entirely hand made. I found my passion for analogue work through the Kingston School of Art workshops. Here I was able to learn book-binding and to create the entire book box by hand.
